![]() The DVD disc may be warped or bent when removing it from the drive-tray. Warped or bent DVD discs may cause a Live Linux DVD to not boot = need to unbent the disc. I don't, however, see Gparted? I'm guessing I just haven't found it yet, but I did want to see how the partitions got set up (since they seemed to be such a mess). If ImgBurn didn't do it right then Windows Disk Image burner was the fix. If the files were bad, downloading the torrents was the fix. Either the files were bad or ImgBurn did not burn my first attempts correctly. Not sure what fixed my boot from disk issues (I swear, I tried that first). & even other Linux Systems aren't clear on that point, either.ĭo post back, here, if you finally did get that old machine working correctly,Īnd what finally worked out - do check that all of the hardware is working, On the left side to set what the partitions are. If you are doing this stuff for the 1st time, it's not obvious that you use the change / + - icons ![]() Which is the same partitioner that the installer also uses. More to their liking, by pre-partitioning the HDD with Gparted, That is, to erase & use the whole HDD in it's entirety.īut, once you installed a few times, then most people wiil wish to modify the HDDs partitions, Then typically, if you wish to erase the Vista / XP then you would use the 1st item on the menu, Or it can get that ISO for you and then write it. Pierre wrote:the UNetbootin program can write to a usb stick with the ISO that you supply, Is something wrong with the Unetbootin? Maybe I should try and find a different download of that? The only reason I'm afraid to try the delete thing again is because what a pain in the LOL dev/sda2- extended 2.78GB and /dev/sda5- unknown, also 2.78GB. And it (Gparted) lists the main partition as being mounted /cdrom? Then, some unallocated (4.08Gb), then, 2 more. And when I use Gparted, there are more partitions than just those 2. If you look at my photo closely, is LM some where on it's own? It doesn't seem to show it in either of the partitions. I think when I did that, it erased the LM install too. But that's where I went wrong the other day, it seems. Yes, when it goes to the partitioning, I can tell it to format the xp (yes, it's taking almost the whole drive). Unetbootin was the only way I found to get LM on the machine. 3 or 4 different tries, none of them would my machine boot. And I tried a few different downloads, used ImgBurn to burn the ISO's. I used that, because I couldn't seem to burn a media that would boot. The unetbootin allows the install to the hard disk. I installed Ubuntu once before, on the machine, but I have software for a vinyl cutter and making that work on Ubuntu, at the time, was very difficult.Īctually, I didn't use any disk, or stick. Etc.Īny help would be awesome, and greatly appreciated. You will not be able to create, delete or resize partitions on this disk, but you may be able to install to existing partitions there.' Then, sda1 (ntfs) and sda5 (unknown). That exclamation at the top says 'Your installation medium is on /dev/sda1. and all I can do is mess with partitions, which was my demise the first time. I get 'Installation type' but it appears jumbled. 'for best results, please ensure this computer has 8.5GB. When I click Install Linux Mint, from the desktop, the first screen I get is 'Welcome' and it wants me to choose the language, and I can view the release notes. I can't choose "Replace XP", or do 'something else'. I do NOT get the screen asking me what I want to do. I've seen screen shots of how to install. Here's where I realized, this time, something isn't right. Showed cancel or ignore, but it was a frozen window. it froze with some error about the drive (or something) being busy or not available. Started the install, with no intentions of keeping Vista in the first place (could not update it). this is where I went to tears, last night. Could not get a DVD to boot (making my story short). Originally shipped with XP, switched to Vista home premium. My apologies if this is some where else, but I don't see anything exactly like my issue.
